JYJA Studio is a design firm with offices in Sydney, Australia, and Beijing, China. Established by Ji Yuji in 2011 as Urbantect Architecture, the studio is a dynamic practice with an international presence.

Ji Yuji earned his Master’s in Architecture from the University of Sydney in 2005, achieving distinction or higher in all subjects. He later worked at Scott Carver and Cox Architecture in Sydney before establishing the studio.

The practice focuses on design-led projects across a range of types and scales. We have completed numerous full-phase projects—from regional plans to civic and cultural buildings—including the Beijing Yuanchuang Metropolis and the Chongqing Bloomage Live Sports Center. While primarily working independently, the studio has also collaborated with international architects — for example, serving as COX Architecture’s China Chief Architectural Consultant for the China National Maritime Museum and collaborating with Ateliers Jean Nouvel on Beijing Metropolis NAVA.  Its experience in diverse project types, full-phase involvement, and cross-cultural practice have enriched the firm’s expertise and evolved its design philosophy.

Our design process starts with an intuitive perception of the site, a perception that stems from the history, life scenes, atmosphere, and even the direct physical experience of the place. Though this early intuition can be subjective and incomplete, it gradually merges with a holistic understanding of project execution as experience builds. This intuition is refined and structured through rational processes, ultimately translating into effective practical outcomes. We repeatedly examine the relationship between natural conditions and built forms, recognizing that this relationship extends beyond the spatial interaction of buildings  and environment to encompass intrinsic questions of aesthetic judgment.

The process, from design and construction to use, unfolds as a dynamic evolution over time, with temporality as its inherent attribute. We see our role as guiding this continuum, where design decisions resonate through a building’s lifespan. The design phase becomes a stage where multiple forces interact and create tension: the interplay of form and its underlying forces, balanced with collaborative engagement among clients, communities, and stakeholders. We view tectonic design as an essential method bridging design and construction - material choices, structural detailing, and on-site refinements all form vital parts of our practice. Ultimately, a building  is both a space for living and a place for life. Our work consistently focuses on the complete vision, striving to transform each building into a vessel that holds memories and possibilities.
